Prince Albert of Monaco Awarded a Chromy

CHROMY POUR PRINCE ALBERT 1 On June 11th Prince Albert II gave a private reception at the Monaco Palace for Anna Chromy and her husband Wolfgang Stein, President of The Conscience Institute, in order to celebrate his Chromy Award.

In a short speech Anna Chromy, a long-time resident of the Principality, laid out the reasons for the Award to Prince Albert, as a leading figure in the global combat against climate change, for the preservation of the oceans, and sustainable development, through his Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and other novel initiatives.

The Prince, who appreciates and supports Anna Chromy’s work since he inaugurated her first major sculpture exhibition in the Monte Carlo Opera House in 1996, expressed in moving words his gratitude and appreciation for this honor. He reminded the audience of Anna’s sculptures installed in the Principality, a Carmen and Cloak of Conscience installed in the Palace, and Ulysses in front of the Monaco Yacht Club.

Chromy Award to Philippe Pozzo di Borgo

Philippe Pozzo di Borgo receives the Chromy Award from Anna Chromy

Philippe Pozzo di Borgo receives the Chromy Award from Anna Chromy

For Philippe Pozzo di Borgo, who lives in a universe totally different from normal life, “Silence is Conscience”. This Chromy award was noted as the most moving yet.

At the age of 42, Pozzo di Borgo began the next chapter of his life – confined to a wheelchair. The second half of his life has been marked with loss, pain and readjustment. Three years after his accident, his wife Béatrice died of cancer. These were blows that forced him to ponder life more deeply than the average person does. Pozzo di Borgo’s diagnosis is dire. “Our society is in the middle of a crisis,” he says. “People are insecure because they don’t know what their future will look like.”

And yet is outlook is remarkably uplifting and optimistic. He is charismatic in his approach to help others and entirely unselfish about his own state. “All people are dependent on each other” he says. “Handicapped people can play the role of the guardian because they remind us of the finiteness of life. We’re not always beautiful, athletic, immortal. We are – the older we become – fragile.”

He also adds that if we look closely we’ll find that handicapped people are in the majority in society. And that is what he attributes to the huge success of the film about his life, “The Intouchables” (2011).

The Club of Rome

In the introduction to its report “The World in 2052”, The Club of Rome describes the current situation of our world in the following terms: “Humanity finds itself at an evolutionary crossroad. The choice is between a storm of progressively deepening crises and expanding perspectives of unprecedented opportunities…

The recent failure of collective action to address international financial instability, climate change, unemployment and food insecurity (and we would like to add: control of nuclear power, the arms and drugs trade and waste of non-renewable resources, including water) seem to justify pessimism. But this failure has been the result of a piecemeal, fragmentary approach to both understanding and addressing the issues (the problems are global, the governance is local). The root causes of the crises we are witnessing rest on outmoded theoretical concepts, values and institutions…

There is a growing understanding and an increasing consensus of the kind of world we want to live in…., a world that manages to live off the resources which the finite planet and the infinite human ingenuity provide, an equitable society which lives sustainably… Humanity has the opportunities, the tools, the science, technology and the insight to overcome the systemic crises and to move to a better world.”

Anna Chromy “Les Chromys”

The Chromy Awards 2013

award_optThe Chromys are inspired by the work of the visionary artist Anna Chromy, and in particular by her Cloak of Conscience. She scrutinizes in her creations the conscience and ethics of her contemporaries, and endeavours to show us ways to overcome our present deadlock through interior change, based on morals and ethics. We have to understand our unity with others and our interdependence with nature, where every individual act has a repercussion on the whole.

Our Conscience, expressed in the Cloak, makes us see the Beauty in Life. It instils Love into our Heart, and makes us strive for the sublimity and harmonious order, which reveal themselves both in nature and the world of thought.

The Chromys are an initiative of The Conscience Institute, which aims to promote a new conscience in all walks of life, be it in business, science, philosophy, environment, and others. To create the awareness, it has spent twelve years establishing a network of Cloaks of Conscience of different sizes in over twenty public locations throughout Europe. It has now created the Chromys Awards to honor exemplary personalities who live the values inherent in the prize.

Espace Pierre Cardin

Espace Pierre Cardin

For the first edition of the Chromys we have chosen the Champs Elysées in Paris, the most famous avenue in the world. Built in the 17th century, the Champs Elysées is today a global symbol of elegance and sophistication, and it is here where Parisians celebrate New Year and all other historic and national events.

Espace Cardin, named after its founder, the famous couturier Pierre Cardin is, with its 700 seat theatre, one of the most prestigious event locations in Paris. It has been used by many popular television shows in the past, such as Champs Elysées by Michel Drucker.

ANNA CHROMY

ANNA CHROMY

The Chromys Awards are based on the life-time work of the artist Anna Chromy. She is the artist of The “Cloak of Conscience”, the largest sculpture in history, created out of a single block of 250 tons of white marble from the famous Michelangelo quarry in Carrara.

She is the first female recipient of the prestigious Premio Michelangelo, she is the first female artist to have been admitted as Professor to the National Academy of Sculpture in Beijing, and she is the first foreign artist in the hundred years of history of the National Museum of China in Beijing to be invited to hold an exhibition in this national treasure from 13 – 26 May, 2013.

Among her many other works related to the theme of conscience figures the “Cosmic Clock of Conscience”. Combined with Award Winners, whose innovation and creativity is matched by their moral and ethic commitment this will make the Event a must for companies wanting to portray their innovative capabilities combined with their community engagements.

Empathy and Innovation = Creative and Social Excellence.

Chromys Presentation at Cannes Film Festival 2012

Michelle RodriguezMichelle Rodriguez, star of the acclaimed movie Avatar and anti whaling activist, held the first Chromy award for Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd at Cannes on Tuesday 23rd May.

Michelle Rodriguez and Anna ChromyThe event was held in the beach terrace of the Martinez Hotel and featured a live video link with Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd and one of the Chromy Awards nominations. He was unable to attend the event because he was arrested in Germany last week on grounds of his anti-shark-finning activism in Costa Rica ten years ago.

Anna Chromy herself presented the first ‘Chromy’ to Paul Watson. The trophy, which is a bronze replica of her world-famous marble ‘Cloak’, was held for Paul by Michelle Rodriguez until he is able to receive it in person. Rodriguez, herself a member of the Sea Shepherd Foundation, was invited to the judicial committee of The Chromys. She will therefore carry weight in the decision of who the finalists are for the Chromy Awards in early 2013.

The World in 2052

World in 2052Humanity has made immense progress over the last decades. The starting point for setting a future’s agenda can be anchored in a healthier, better educated, more prosperous, and better informed and connected world than ever.

Humanity finds itself at an evolutionary crossroads. The choice is between a perfect storm of progressively deepening crises and expanding perspectives of unprecedented opportunities.

Viewed from the perspective of the past, the current crises predict a gloomy future. Viewed as an evolutionary opportunity to break with outmoded ideas, values and institutions, they provide the essential conditions for the rapid transition to a more peaceful, prosperous, equitable and sustainable future.

The recent failure of collective action to address international financial instability, climate change, unemployment and food insecurity seem to justify pessimism. But this failure has been the result of a piecemeal, fragmentary approach to both understanding and addressing the issues.

The root causes of the crises we are witnessing rest on outmoded theoretical concepts, values and institutions. The remedy lies in the formulation of a new theory appropriate to the radically different conditions of the 21st century, commitment to progressive values that integrate individual freedom and equitable cooperation to maximize the welfare and well-being of all, and establishment of more effective national and global institutions.

There is a growing understanding and an increasing consensus of the kind of world we want to live in. A global society which has moved beyond hunger and suppression, a world that manages to live off the resources which the finite planet and the infinite human ingenuity provide, an equitable society which lives sustainably and is a lot better off and happier than today. The vision of the Club of Rome is one of an enlightened world guided by values of cooperation.

The world in 2052 can be a much safer and resilient place than it is today. Humanity has the opportunities, the tools, the science, technology and the insight to overcome the systemic crisis and to move into a better world. Whether we manage to do so will depend on each one of us.

The ‘Conscience’ Teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in the Fight Against Terrorism

Mahatma_Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi

It is the practice of nonviolence which these days receives the most attention among the values brought upon us by Gandhi. The endemic violence in today’s world makes the commitment to nonviolence particularly difficult, but all the more important and urgent.

The Mahatma’s nonviolence teaching is not only a code of conduct for individuals but also for social institutions, religious communities, governments and other organisations. In the face of today’s problem with international terrorism, nonviolence in the spirit of Gandhi cannot be an attitude where we beg the aspirant terrorists to renounce their cruelties, and not even an open discussion in a pacific mode with potential enemies.

One of the primary teachings of Gandhi is that you cannot defeat violence and cruelty as long as you have not yourself completely renounced this ugliness. “Satyagraha- the Truth Force” allows breaking laws which are suppressive, but disallows violence! Therefore the high moral status of the defenders of democracy is of utter importance. The loss of this status provides an immense strength to their violent enemies.

Seen under this aspect, transgressions of the defenders of democracy, and dirty behavior of those who pretend to fight for democratic values and human rights, have greatly helped terrorists to recruit new combatants and to generate public sympathy und understanding for their ugly acts. However powerful the armaments of the defenders of democracy might be, the loss of their moral status undermines substantially their strength.

Another, more long-term aspect of Gandhi’s teaching is the effort to unite Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Schools and similar institutions cultivating hate towards other communities or groups of people have to be closed. This is true for Coranic schools, but not only. These principles have to be applied to any structure which promotes a strong sense of sectarian identity, which distances one human being from the other, based on religion, ethnic belonging, or other beliefs.

It has therefore been decided by the Board of the Conscience Institute to organize the Chromy Awards ceremony each year in the honor the Mahatma, celebrating his teachings and the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (or Spiritus Mundi as Anna Chromy calls it), the philosophy which understands the whole universe as one family.

To the Woman who is “All Women”

Shirin Ebadi

Shirin Ebadi

This is the speech Paulo Coelho wrote in honor of the Peace Nobel Winner 2003, Shirin Ebadi, words, which according to the author, can be applied to all those who are working to create a better world. The text, taken from his wonderful book “Like the Flowing River”, describes a conscience fit to be honored with a Chromy Award:

“The Persian poet Rumi once said that life is like being sent by a king to another country in order to carry out a particular task. The person sent may do a hundred other things in that other country, but if he or she fails to fulfill the particular task he or she was charged with, it is as if nothing had been done.

  • To the woman who understood her task.
  • To the woman who looked to the road ahead of her, and knew that hers would be a difficult journey.
  • To the woman who did not attempt to make light of those difficulties, but, on the contrary, spoke out against them and made them clearly visible.
  • To the woman who made the lonely feel less alone, who fed those who hungered and thirsted for justice, who made the oppressor feel as bad as those he oppressed.
  • To the woman who always keeps her door open, her hands working, her feet moving.
  • To the woman who personifies the verses of that other Persian poet, Hafez, when he says: Not even seven thousand years of joy can justify seven days of repression.
  • To the woman who is here tonight, may she be each and every one of us, may her example spread, may she still have many difficult days ahead, so that she can complete her work, so that, for the generations to come, the meaning of injustice will be found only in dictionary definitions and never in the lives of human beings.
  • And may she travel slowly, because her pace is the pace of change, and change, real change, always takes a very long time.”

I would like to add as an encouragement a citation of the Bhagavad Gita from the same book, which reflects the meaning of the Void in my Cloak:

“Man is not born, nor does he die. Having come into existence, he will never cease to be, because he is eternal and permanent.
Just as man discards old clothes and puts on new clothes, so the soul discards the old body and puts on a new one.
But the soul is indestructible; swords cannot pierce it, fire cannot burn it, water cannot wet it, the wind cannot dry it. It is beyond the power of all these things.

Since man is always indestructible, he is always victorious (even in his defeats), and that is why he should never be sad.”

Anna Chromy

The Cloak Trophy

Over the centuries many philosophers and other great spirits have dealt with the problem of conscience and given us their definition. Today we can define Conscience as Ethically driven energy (C = E x e). This ethic Energy/Conscience is based on Love and Beauty. It can be found in individuals, but also in collectivities and corporations.

It will be the fuel of the third millennium. Individuals can improve their energy and conscience through spiritual exercise, physical activity, healthy food, empathy with all creatures of the planet, and control of their ecological footprint in order to reduce its influence on the biosphere. By doing this they take control of their life and become masters of their destiny.

Seen collectively, this will “give back the power to the people”, by creating millions of individual entrepreneurs who decide freely to interact and cooperate between them, wherever their counterparts may be located. They will be aware that to live in a secure and none polluted environment, where we maintain our biodiversity, they will have to come to terms with the other inhabitants of the globe, a truly decentralized globalization.

The conscientious citizen already produces and retrieves his individual information through the Internet. In the future he will also produce his own energy from clean, renewable sources, in order to heat and condition his home, fuel his electric car and other machinery, and share his surplus with others through intelligent grids. He will act as his own banker through the access to micro-credit and similar facilities and he will choose small enterprises respecting the code of conscience to provide their financing.

The artist Anna Chromy has created the symbol for the third millennium – The Cloak of Conscience an archi-sculpture five meters high carved into a single block from the famous Cave Michelangelo. This space of meditation will be covered by a glass pyramid based on the “Golden Section”.

The proportions of the golden ratio, largely ignored in our times, are the precondition for beauty which instills love into our hearts. The shape of the pyramid has also come to symbolize knowledge. The Cloak in the Pyramid will radiate the combined energy of harmony. The trophies of the Chromys are small reproduction of the Cloak of Conscience. They will honor personalities which we can rightly consider the Conscience of the 3rd millennium.

The Cloak of Conscience and The Chromys – The Symbol for Change Based on Ethics – A Label for Justice and Freedom

The CloakBy now it’s clear to everybody, – we are all victims. Victims of our own greed, victims of irresponsible traders spurred by a thoroughly flawed remuneration system, victims of bankers who had a candid belief in the brain power of their geniuses in mathematics, of politicians who did not understand what was going on in their financial institutions, and many others. We are victims of a global financial system without control through a global political supervisory body, a system determined by big black holes in the form of offshore tax havens which siphon off the illegally achieved profits. read on

My Motivation for Creating The Cloak of Conscience, Symbol of The Chromys

CREATION: My creativity erupts like a volcano, powerful and spontaneous. This is true for the Cloak and all my other works. I believe the Universe has been created the same way. How and by whom we don’t know, we can only believe. We harbor all the divine flame of creation, but not everybody finds a way to express it. I am lucky and thankful for that.

CHALLENGE: A pristine white block of marble, without any fissures or impurities, is a rare gift of nature, like a precious stone. To have the opportunity to transform the largest block ever found into a work of art was a great responsibility and an immense joy. In marble only few corrections are allowed, what is chipped away cannot be replaced. When Michelangelo said that “the sculpture is already present in the raw block” he meant that the complete picture has to be in your head from the beginning, otherwise you lose your way.

HARMONY: Beauty is essential for our life. It allows us to see the light of Creation. Beauty instills Harmony in our soul and gives it peace. Peace with ourselves is the precondition for peace with our human fellows. The beauty and harmony of the Cloak shall help the observer to feel this peace and the interior space of the Cloak allows him to explore his inner self. In contrast to the materials of many contemporary works the marble of the Cloak will radiate its beauty forever.

CONSCIENCE: Western civilization has created computers which allow a happy few to amass incredible fortunes within nano-seconds, and it has discovered nuclear fission which allows a crazy few to wipe out humanity, also in a few seconds. But it has failed to develop a global governance to prevent the risk of nuclear war, and it has not been able to conceive a universally shared canon of values, a common Conscience, to share the riches of the few more equally among all human beings.

HISTORY: While great empires usually implode within a short time span, leading civilizations peter out over centuries. It is no coincidence that the Calendar of the Mayas comes to its end in 2012, five hundred years after the demise of their empire. So it will be with Western Civilization. We have reached the crest and as our influence starts to wane the force of others is going to increase. This is the natural flow of the world.

ETHICS: I believe deeply in the values of Beauty, Kindness and Truth. I believe that it is urgent for the survival of mankind to create a renewed sense of ethics, once a domain of religions, and to create an economic system that can function without plundering the non-renewable resources of Gaia, our mother earth, and without the destruction of our environment, our nest.

THE CLOAK: Installed in 2012, the year of transition to a new era, it shall remind everybody that it is imperative we develop a global Conscience to control and direct the phenomenal scientific and economic advances towards a common good for all.
